Oct 3rd: Arrive at Bangkok, Thailand. You are greeted at the Bangkok airport by an Easy Tours Representative and escorted to your Airport Hotel. You are assisted with your check-in and then you are at leisure until your short morning flight to Luang Prabang. (Overnight – Novotel Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport) Oct 4th: Bangkok - Luang Prabang. (B) Check out of your hotel in the early morning and you have the option to either take the hotel shuttle or a fairly short walk back to the airport for your flight to Luang Prabang. Upon arrival at Luang Prabang, you are greeted at the airport by your Easy Tours Travel Facilitator or your Laos Connoisseur Guide and ushered to your vehicle. You are driven to your boutique luxury resort and assisted with check-in. All of Luang Prabang’s Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and offers visitors a perfect micro chasm of the landscapes and culture of Southeast Asia. Its incredible utopian setting provides venues for a large and diverse array of activities, including Mekong River explorations, waterfalls, and much more. UNESCO describes Luang Prabang as “an outstanding example of the fusion of traditional architecture and Lao urban structures with those built by the European colonial authorities in the 19th and 20th centuries. Its unique, remarkably well-preserved townscape illustrates a key stage in the blending of these two distinct cultural traditions.” (Overnight – Rosewood Luang Prabang) Oct 5th: Luang Prabang. (B) You are at leisure on this day. The only service provided by Easy Tours is your hotel room, including breakfast and taxes. (Overnight – Rosewood Luang Prabang) Oct 6th: Luang Prabang. (B) A pre-sunrise start today gives you the opportunity to participate in one of Luang Prabang’s most iconic traditions: donating food to the local monks (Tak Bat). Your Tour Director Guide will assist you in procuring the groceries and instruct you on the process as the monks walk by silently and open their baskets for you to place your contribution in them. The monks have been collecting their day’s meals in this manner for centuries. Afterward enjoy a walk through the nearby fresh food market. The busy market is a hive of activity as locals purchase fresh fruits, vegetables, and fish caught from the Mekong River. Return to the hotel for breakfast and to freshen up. Mid-Morning: Join your Tour Director Guide for a tour of the charming old town. Visit the quaint Royal Palace Museum, which provides an excellent overview of local history. We then continue to the beautiful Wat Xiengthong, one the most important Buddhist temples in the region. You have the opportunity to receive a blessing from one of the temple’s head monks, if you so desire. A short walk from here brings you to the nearby Wat Khili. The charming traditional library building here houses a historic photo exhibition of Buddhist heritage, known as The Buddhist Archive of Photography. A unique collection of 35,000 historical photographs that were collected by several monk collectors and photographers over 120 years. With prior notice we can facilitate a curated private visit to this invaluable collection. From here you will proceed for a lunch break, if you are so inclined. Proceed to the wonderful Traditional Arts & Ethnology Centre, where we are usually able to facilitate a conversation with one of its two co-founders. You will experience a Directors Tour that provides insights into the myriad Laos' ethnic cultures and their traditions and customs. Next is Luang Prabang’s oldest temple, Wat Visoun, which, because of its design, is known as The Watermelon Stupa. The Stupa dates back to 1503 and is now home to a collection of religious artefacts. You will learn about the wat’s fascinating history and early Lao Buddhist architecture from your Tour Director Guide. Late Afternoon: You have the option of a guided excursion to Phousi Mountain. This is a hill in the center of the old town that provides a breathtaking view of the town and the Mekong River at sunset. This excursion involves a fairly rigorous climb up 350 paved steps, but the view from the top is an amazing photographic opportunity, as it showcases the remarkable beauty of Luang Prabang. (Overnight – Rosewood Luang Prabang) Oct 7th: Luang Prabang. (B) You are driven to the gorgeous set of waterfalls at Kuang Si. Upon your arrival at the entrance, you have the option of a quick visit to the small bear rescue center at the base of the falls. Proceed onward into the jungle on well- maintained walkways, until you arrive at the first small set of falls. The base of these falls has a beautiful natural blue swimming hole the size of a large public pool – swimming is permitted at all the falls, so you may want to dress appropriately. Continue on your leisurely walk through the jungle, making your way from waterfall to waterfall, to one idyllic swimming hole after another. The finale is a stunning 200 ft. cascade that is the most impressive of the collection of waterfalls. You are at leisure with your guide and vehicle this afternoon and can enjoy local excursions based on your preferences - your guide will have suggestions. (Overnight – Rosewood Luang Prabang) Oct 8th: Luang Prabang – Upper Mekong Cruise. (B,L,D) You are assisted with your check-out in the morning and driven to the pier at Luang Prabang where you will board your boutique cruiser, the Heritage Line Anovong Cruise. Your three-night voyage to the Lao-Thai border near Chiang Rai offers insights into Laos’ most captivating landscapes and rural lifestyles. The cruise operators detailed itinerary is linked below – We strongly urge you to review all the unique experiences and the charming vessel you will cruise on. Itinerary: Heritage Line - Upper Mekong Cruises [3-Night itinerary] (heritage-line.com) Vessel: https://heritage-line.com/ship/anouvong/ - you are in a Signature Suite. Oct 9th& 10th: Upper Mekong Cruise. (B,L,D) Oct 11th: Upper Mekong Cruise - Chiang Rai. (B,L) In the afternoon your Cruise Operator will facilitate passengers to and at the Lao-Thailand border. Their description of the end of cruise process is as follows - Upon check-out, we assist you with your luggage and we transfer you to the Lao-Thao boarder. We also help you with the border crossing before bidding you farewell on the Thai side in front of the immigration building. After you cross into Thailand you are greeted by your Thailand Connoisseur Guide and driven to nearby Chiang Rai. Arrive at Chiang Rai in the evening and you are assisted with your check-in to your river-view suite at your upscale hotel. Thailand’s northernmost city was once the capital of the Lanna Kingdom, and today is the commercial center of the Golden Triangle region. The mountainous region of the north has been significantly influenced by Burmese and Chinese culture due to its proximity to those nations. The culture, language, and food, even the physical appearance of the local Lanna descendants, all stand in subtle contrast to the rest of Thailand. (Overnight – The Riverie by Kathathani) Oct 12th: Chiang Rai. (B) Join your Guide for a full day exploring the Golden Triangle and Chiang Rai Regions. Enjoy a scenic 1.5-hour drive to a pier in the ancient region of Chiang Saen. Upon arrival you will board your boat near a frequently photographed massive golden Buddha statue located on the riverbank. Enjoy a private cruise along the upper Mekong River toward SopRuak and the exact coordinates of the Golden Triangle. This is the spot where the countries of Thailand, Laos, and Burma meet, and is a notorious piece of real estate as it was once the location for the production of most of the world’s opium. Disembark from the boat and you are driven to the nearby hilltop viewing site from where you can clearly see the spot where the three nations meet at the confluence of two rivers. You may want to break for lunch at this time. A brief optional excursion here can be to the fascinating Hall of Opium. This is a first-class museum and interactive exhibit, dedicated to teaching visitors about every aspect of the poppy and its derivative - opium. Informative exhibits detail opium’s effects on the human body and its profound influence on human history. After lunch you are driven back towards Chiang Rai. As you approach Chiang Rai, a short detour into picturesque hills will bring you to a set of Hill Tribe villages. Hill Tribes and today’s reality - many travel companies continue to paint a picture of the unique traditional clothing, jewelry, and lifestyles of Southeast Asia’s hill tribes as if these have remained unchanged over the last few decades. The truth is quite the opposite. Although some still live in their villages and farm, their lifestyles have changed; they dress like other Thai people do, practice modern cultivation methods, live in brick-and-mortar houses, speak the Thai dialect that is local to their region, ride motorbikes and drive pickup trucks as part of their daily routine. There are a handful of locales where the tribal communities have been partially preserved in their original form with support from government funded agencies. The goal is to provide a place to live, while also making them self-sufficient, to the few who do not want to change Our guests visit one of such small group of villages, located near Chiang Rai. During this excursion, you will pay a visit to the Kiran (longneck), Akka, Lahu, and Yao tribes. Your Guide will introduce you to some of the villagers and explain the origins and customs of these unique tribal peoples. These villagers still honor their heritage by dressing in the vibrant and colorful garments unique to their people. The entry fees to this set of villages supports the hill tribe residents of the village, and the tribal residents also offer hand crafted items for sale, although they are not the least bit aggressive in pushing their wares. A few people condemn such village tours as being degrading to the tribal people. They ignore the reality that this is still a good way for these few tribals to earn a living in the present, without completely changing their lifestyles. They also are educating visitors about their culture and customs. After visiting the villages with your guide, you are driven back to Chiang Rai. (Overnight – The Riverie by Kathathani) Oct 13th: Chiang Rai – Chiang Mai. (B) You are assisted with your check-out from your resort and driven to a nearby monument that is nothing like anything you have ever seen before. This is Wat Rong Khun, also known as the White Temple. This recent striking creation of a famous local architect is extremely ornate and beautiful in its design and houses an impressive array of intricate sculptures. This is the attraction that gets the most visitors in the Chiang Rai region and for good reason – it is completely different from any other monument in Southeast Asia. From here you are driven about 3 and a half scenic hours to Chiang Mai and your beautiful boutique luxury resort – you can have a snack packed from your resort, or have a late lunch upon arrival in Chiang Mai. Your resort is the top-ranked luxury lodging in Chiang Mai for very good reasons as it is extremely charming, serves great food, and has an excellent spa. You are a few minute walk from an upscale riverside dining and bar area and an easily available short tuk-tuk ride) to downtown Chiang Mai. The Lanna Kingdom flourished in northern Thailand between the 12th - 15th centuries, and Chiang Mai was the longtime capital of the kingdom after it was moved from Chiang Rai. The city is the second largest city in Thailand, and the cultural capital of the north. It is a fascinating combination of unique architecture, ancient history with its associated rituals, and a modern metropolis, and one of Asia’s best cities to explore on foot, with a bustling street food scene. Your hotel offers private Thai cuisine classes conducted by its master chefs and we can schedule one for you upon request. In the late afternoon drive up to Doi Suthep, the hill on the edge of the city that dominates the Chiang Mai skyline. Once at the top, you will find the 309 stairs up to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, which are flanked on each side by beautiful Nagas running the entire length of the stairs. You also have the option of taking a large elevator (which does usually have a short waiting line) up to the Wat. Once at the top, enjoy the spiritual ambience of one of Thailand’s most holy places, as well as some superb sunset views of the city. You will see devout Thai’s circling the main stupa in a ritualistic manner, and many others on their knees in deep prayer. (Overnight – 137 Pillars House) Oct 14th: Chiang Mai - Doi Inthanon Excursion. (B,L) Enjoy an excursion to spectacular Doi Inthanon Mountain and National Park. The mountain is home to the massive and gorgeous Chedis that are the subject of the most popular photos that travel journals and websites use for the Chiang Mai region. These beautiful chedis are actually fairly far from Chiang Mai, located as you drive up to the peak of Doi Inthanon. You will also visit other major attractions inside Doi Inthanon National Park, which is a protected area that is home to the highest mountain in Thailand, Doi Inthanon. Doi Inthanon is a superb national park full of majestic waterfalls, lush green valleys, terraced paddy fields, fruit, flower and vegetables crops, and ethnic communities living happily and comfortably in their natural environment. Once at the peak you will admire the views and then enjoy an easy trek through the mist laden virgin forest and be fascinated with the unique flora that is found here. After this adventure you will be driven downhill and lunch will be at the Royal Project Kitchen (with fresh ingredients from project farmers), while admiring the beautiful surroundings and views. After lunch there will be two more not-to-be-missed experiences on your way back to Chiang Mai. First you will stop at the two massive colorful Chedis, which are dedicated to the Beloved Late King and the Revered Queen and are located in a magical spot with lush undulating hills and spectacular views. The immaculate terraced gardens with a plethora of colorful exotic flowerbeds that surround the Chedis make for a breathtaking locale. The second fascinating stop as you head down the mountain is the Royal Projects Highway Market run by the Hill Tribes of the Doi Inthanon region. You will stop and walk around the outdoor stalls selling fruits, produce, nuts and other items organically grown by the simple and now well-to-do tribal locals, some of whom will be dressed in their unique clothing. This market, its wares, and the tribal people that grow and sell here are a growing testament of the success of the Late King’s vision and efforts. (Overnight – 137 Pillars House) Oct 15th: Chiang Mai. (B) Next you will explore the historic walled city of Chiang Mai. This tour demonstrates the architectural diversity and blending of styles that the Lanna were known for. Included are visits to some of the iconic old temples of ancient Chiang Mai, including Wat Phra Singh, Wat Chedi Luang and Wat Chiang Man, as well as walks through the busy downtown area. WE recommend a slightly early lunch before you drive out to your next activity. Private Elephant Camp Experience - No Elephant Riding. Enjoy a drive into the mountains with your guide to enjoy some time with Thailand’s iconic animal – the elephant. You will enjoy a private experience with an elephant and its trainer at one of the finest elephant camps in Northern Thailand, during which you will learn a lot as you interact with the majestic animal. You are driven back to your Chiang Mai Resort in the late afternoon. Chiang Mai has a great street market every night, with the largest market occurring on Sunday nights. Join your Guide this evening for an excursion to Chiang Mai’s most exciting and extensive night market. There is a fascinating street food scene and the crowds and activity are another one of Southeast Asia’s amazing photo opportunities. (Overnight – 137 Pillars House) Oct 16th: Chiang Mai – Bangkok – Ayutthaya. (B) You are assisted with your check-out around 10 AM and driven to the airport to board your noon flight to Bangkok. From Bangkok Airport you will proceed on the 1.5-hour drive to ancient Ayutthaya, and you can stop for lunch before the drive. Enjoy the scenic drive through rural Thailand until you arrive at Ayutthaya where you are assisted with your check-in to your small boutique riverside hotel with its wonderful view of some of Ayutthaya’s ancient sites. (Overnight – IuDia On The River) Oct 17th: Ayutthaya – Kanchanaburi. (B,L) This morning you will enjoy an exploration of Ayutthaya, the last capital of the kingdom of Siam. Ayutthaya is home to the crown jewels of Thailand’s historical monuments, architecturally interesting structures that showcase Thailand’s glorious past. As there is a plethora of such structures dotting the area, you will visit the most impressive monuments, and, as always, can add or remove as you please. Before being sacked by the Burmese army in the late 18th century, Ayutthaya was a thriving city, one of the most important capitals in all of South East Asia. During its golden age, Ayutthaya had strong diplomatic and commercial relationships with existing world powers such as Japan, Portugal and France. Start your exploration of the area with a visit to the site of the Royal Palace, which served as home to 33 kings of Siam between 1350 and 1767 A.D. The three large bell shaped chedis of Wat Phra Si Sanphet (the Royal Chapel), which were constructed in the 14th century, stand proud and tall even today, and are perfect examples of Ayutthaya style architecture. You will now drive a very short distance to the site of the royal monastery, known as Wat Mahathat. This surreal spot is replete with ancient Buddha statues that range from being in excellent condition, to some that have deteriorated significantly. The statues are spread throughout the towering Khmer-style ruins, and this site also boasts the much-photographed stone carving with the Buddha’s head partially wrapped up by the roots of an ancient banyan tree. The next stop is Wat Lokayasutharam, the site of Ayutthaya’s largest Reclining Buddha statue, at over 100 feet (31 meters) long and 25 feet (8 meters) high. The last stop, and perhaps the most magical and photogenic in Ayutthaya, is the 17th century Wat Chaiwatthanaram. With its Khmer-style tower and surrounding prangs, it bears a resemblance to Angkor Wat, and may have been built to commemorate the king’s victory over Cambodia. You are driven back to your boutique hotel to checkout before noon. After you checkout lunch is included at a restaurant on the banks of the river, and then begins the scenic drive to the region of Kanchanaburi. Less than halfway through the 3.5 to 4 hour drive you will witness the landscape begin to change from relatively flat farmland to the rocky mountainous jungle often found along the Thai-Burmese border. This region was the theater of historic battles and tragic episodes during WWII. It is here that prisoners of war built the famous bridge over the River Kwai. Arrive at your unique resort on the River Kwai, one of the most appreciated places to stay that we offer in all of Southeast Asia. Arrive at a pier and your baggage is transferred to your long-tailed boat. Experience the wilderness and nature’s sounds during the scenic 15-minute boat ride before disembarking at the resort, where you are assisted with check-in. Comfortable private floating villas are strung together near a bank of the scenic river, and you are surrounded by jungle on the slopes of the hills on both banks of the river. The villa’s sway gently with the river’s movement (the swaying is a little more pronounced when a powerboat cruises past during the day, but it is not uncomfortable), and this may be the best sleep that you get during your exploration! The resort provides some leisure activities, including inner tubes for those guests that want to float down the expanse of villas, but most guests will just want to sit on the swinging bench or the chairs on their porch and watch the river stream by. We highly recommend turning off your porch light for a moment after sunset – the canopy of stars above you makes for a breathtaking sight! (Overnight – Float House River Kwai) Oct 18th: Kanchanaburi. (B,L) This morning you will awake to the sounds of the river and the jungle. After breakfast your Guide will meet you in the lobby area and escort you on a gentle 10-minute hike up the hill to the Lawa Cave. At over 1400 feet deep, this impressive geological formation is the largest in Kanchanaburi and features several chambers with many large stalagmites and stalactites. Upon completion of your adventure you will return to your resort to freshen up, then board a long-tailed boat for a short cruise down the River Kwai. Kanchanaburi’s physical beauty is sometimes overshadowed by its history, and the scenery along this part of the river is majestic. Disembark and proceed for a tour of a Mon village. The Mon people are one of Southeast Asia’s most ancient races. Originally from Burma, these people are integrated into Thai society, but deeply cherish and honor their heritage. Enjoy a walk around their village area, hidden in the jungle, and visit the village school, as well as their temple & gold Chedi (Stupa). Board the boat again and relax and enjoy the scenery as you continue north up the river to Hintok River Camp. You will be mesmerized by the magic of this unique spot, as you enjoy lunch on top of a cliff overlooking a twist of the River Kwai. After lunch you will return to your floating lodge to freshen up. In the afternoon you can head out for a very scenic drive through the countryside of Kanchanaburi Province to the infamous Hell Fire Pass. This man-made crevasse in the mountain was carved using hand-held chisels by prisoners of war, mostly Australian soldiers. The POW’s worked in horrible conditions under the whip of the Japanese soldiers, who were desperate to complete the Thai-Burma railway. Many lives were sacrificed to complete this project. The name Hell Fire Pass comes from one soldier’s description of the site, describing the scene as workers toiled through the night by firelight. You will walk along the remnants of the tracks from the path of the railway. There are memorials to the POW’s and a small museum at this site as well. (Overnight – Float House River Kwai) Oct 19th: Kanchanaburi. (B,L) This morning you will awake to the sounds of the river and the jungle. At around 8 AM you will cruise back to the jetty and proceed on the incredibly scenic drive to Erawan National Park. Our early departure is to avoid the day-trippers from as far away as Bangkok. We recommend that you bring swim wear and a towel from your villa. The park is one of Thailand’s most beautiful parks, and the 7 tier Erawan Falls have emerald green pools at each level. You will enjoy the easy hike to the base of the waterfall, and then, those willing to make a little bit of an effort, can use the trails and ropeways up the different tiers of the waterfall, until the 6th tier. You can stop at any tier and enjoy the beauty that surrounds you, and get into the emerald pools of water if you so desire. The park itself is lush and tropical, and macaques and a variety of birds will entertain you. After a break for lunch, you will experience another extremely scenic drive to the Nam Tok Railway Station, where you will board the train for a fascinating trip on the Death Railway. Enjoy the scenery as the train snakes around hills alongside the River Kwai and passes through dense bamboo forests and jungles. After approximately 1 hour of riding in the extremely slow-moving historic train through amazing scenery, you will disembark at the Thakilen Railway Station, from where you will be driven to your floating lodge’s pier. Board your boat again and enjoy the captivating river and surroundings as you head towards your charming floating resort. (Overnight – Float House River Kwai) Oct 20th: Kanchanaburi – Bangkok. (B,L) You are assisted with your check-out and boarding your long-tailed boat for the ride back to the pier where your transportation awaits. Head out on the 3.5-hour drive to Bangkok, stopping to experience the legendary Bridge on the River Kwai along the way. Explore the infamous bridge and walk along its short expanse if you are so inclined – there are great vantage points all around the bridge. The bridge was built in about 16 months by allied prisoners of war and Asian conscripts, then later destroyed during allied bombing raids. It was later rebuilt by the Japanese as war reparations. These events were the basis for one of Hollywood’s all-time great movies. You will break for lunch at a restaurant with a direct view of the bridge, the river, and the gorgeous surrounding landscape. After lunch you are driven to Bangkok and assisted with your check-in to your award-winning Bill Bensley designed hotel> The striking hotel has excellent facilities and service, and there is a very large collection of incredible ancient sculptures and other artwork that rivals some of the best museums. You are in a charming suite with fairly distant river views. The giant metropolis of Bangkok is a fascinating blend of modern skyscrapers, congested traffic, beautiful and ornate Wats (temples), incredible street food, and a lot more. The colorful Thai culture and the easygoing local lifestyle make this unique city even more interesting. (Overnight – The Siam) Oct 21st: Bangkok. (B) Enjoy a private river cruise to the spectacular Wat Arun, the Temple of the Dawn. This is by far the most striking structure in Bangkok, and is the city’s iconic riverside monument. As with other Thai places of worship, bare legs and shoulders are not acceptable. Please do not climb the steps as they are deceptively steep (12 to 15 inches in height) and there are inadequate or nonexistent support structures for hands. This is Non-Negotiable for anyone who travels with us. After the temple, you will board longtail boats and head to the opposite bank of the river. An interesting 7-to-8-minute walk will bring you to Thailand’s largest flower market, where millions of amazing flowers are spread across hundreds of stalls. Flowers are an integral part of Thai society, and the plethora of fragrant colors amidst the extremely busy shops and stalls are a delight to experience. A very short walk leads to Wat Pho, known as The Temple of the Reclining Buddha. The famous statue of the Buddha is 50 feet (15 meters) high and 140 feet (43 meters) long and is covered in gold leaf. The bottoms of the feet are inlaid with mother of pearl, divided into 108 panels depicting the 108 auspicious symbols used by the Buddha. Proceed to a very nice riverfront restaurant where you will enjoy lunch. Besides the great food, you will have excellent views of the busy river and Wat Arun on the opposite riverbank. Another very short walk will bring you to the Grand Palace complex, which has been the state residence of Thai royalty since 1782 and parts of which are still used for official events. Your Guide will show you some of the more interesting highlights of the complex. The collection of buildings serves as a nice introduction to Thai architecture and provides many great photo opportunities. The most revered spot within the complex is Wat Phra Kaew, also known as the Temple of the Emerald Buddha. This is the most sacred Buddhist temple (wat) in all of Thailand. Except for the Thai King, no other person is allowed to touch this statue. The King changes the statue’s cloak three times each year to correspond to the summer, winter, and rainy seasons. After exploring Bangkok’s most famous attractions, you will be escorted back to your hotel. (Overnight – The Siam) Oct 22nd: Bangkok (B) Your morning will start with a drive to Jim Thompson’s House & Museum, a great introduction to amazing Asian art, and of Bangkok before it became the major city it is today. Before his disappearance in Malaysia over a half century ago, the silk magnate collected an incredible plethora of Southeast Asian art, from Thailand and many other surrounding nations. He had a beautiful home constructed to showcase part of his collection, and also had the museum constructed to house the rest of the collection. The museum buildings themselves are fascinating as they include ancient wooden homes that were brought in from all around Thailand, as well as new wooden construction. You will experience a well-designed tour of the facilities conducted by an expert from the museum. We recommend a slightly early lunch before your next experience. From here you will head to the Chatuchak Weekend Market. Spread over 30 acres with more than 10,000 stalls, this market originated in 1942 and is the oldest, largest, and most diverse weekend market on our planet. Literally anything a local or a visitor could possibly want is available here, and we need to mention that group members are not going to be able to stop at multiple stalls and haggle. The colors, activity and general feel are a joy to experience on a walk through an interesting section of the market. Many of our culture loving guests will spend a few hours in the above market before heading back to their hotel in the late afternoon. If your experience at the market is shorter, you can explore more of fascinating Bangkok and your guide will be happy to make suggestions. (Overnight – The Siam) Oct 23rd: Bangkok – Krabi. (B,L) You are driven to Bangkok’s other airport in the mid-morning after rush hour and assisted in boarding your early afternoon no-frills flight to Krabi. Upon arrival you are driven to the very best lodging in Krabi. Your spectacular boutique resort is on a picturesque peninsula, bordered on two of its sides by a couple of the world’s most beautiful beaches, Railay Beach and Phranang Beach.
